OTRT CLOSED for 2020
We planned on opening in May but consistent high water levels of Lake Michigan & St. Joseph River have made our slice of heaven periodically uninhabitable! COVID was also a factor...
We are re-grouping, scheming and working to open for the the 2021 season. Please enjoy Michigan's Great Southwest and have a safe and happy Summer!
bit of history, a bite or a meal and something to wet your whistle
ABOUT
OTRT
On the River Tavern ('OTR' or 'OTRT') is on the St. Joseph River - actually the Morrison Channel - in St. Joseph, Michigan. Look across the channel and see the boats being put-in & out, paddlers, and wildlife on the water or view it all from our comfortable dining area. The bar/dining area originally was a bait and tackle shop for the charter boats that docked riverside. Now, you sit on the dock right over the water where fishermen unloaded their catches. But, the real story starts way back in the 19th century:
The Mollhagen family settled on this very site in 1853.
The two-story structure was built in the 1800s and is currently used for storage.
Four generations of Mollhagens fished Lake Michigan for almost 140 years.
In 1992 the tackle shop and charter docks were transformed into a bar and restaurant.
